NHS Alliance Launches Clinical Commissioning Federation

Released: 31/03/2010

It is no news that the NHS is facing up to one of the most significant financial challenges in its history and, if clinicians and managers are going to raise to the challenge, they will need to work together to ensure that services are delivered effectively and efficiently.   To deal with this challenge and help managers and clinicians to focus on commissioning and the QUIPP agenda (Quality, Improvement, Productivity and Prevention), the NHS Alliance has set up the Clinical Commissioning Federation, which will replace the PBC Federation.

To deal with this challenge and help managers and clinicians to focus on commissioning and the QUIPP agenda (Quality, Improvement, Productivity and Prevention), the NHS Alliance has set up the Clinical Commissioning Federation, which will replace the PBC Federation.

“Primary care will need to respond very positively to the extremely challenging times that we are heading into, where all the NHS systems will be tested to their limits,” said Dr Amit Bhargava, co-lead of the Clinical Commissioning Federation “We will need to do this with focus, pace and conviction. The NHS Alliance, as always, will lead from the front and provide strong leadership for primary care to influence wise decisions and actions from politicians, managers and clinicians. The Alliance is looking beyond PBC and creating a Clinical Commissioning Federation will build on the learning, the gains and the partnerships made by PBC and re-focus them to emerging issues.”

The Clinical Commissioning Federation is a multi-disciplinary group, which includes a range of clinical commissioners from across the country, including GPs, clinicians from secondary care and community services as well as PBC consortia CEOs and PCT commissioners.

The leadership for the Clinical Commissioning Federation will be provided by Dr Shane Gordon and Dr Amit Bhargava as co-leads, and Julie Wood as director.

Notes to editors:

1.    The NHS Alliance is the only independent body that brings together primary care trusts’ chief executives and other senior managers, doctors and practice managers, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals, along with board chairs and members. We are a value-driven organisation, with no political affiliation, which works in partnership with various bodies associated with the NHS to create a progressive health service that is free from the traditional tribalism of single interest groups.
